Note additional key dates:

  • 28 April 2025 the University's internal deadline for submission of Mandatory Document and Minimum Data in Sapphire to be considered for academic review.
  • 14 May 2025 NHMRC's deadline for Minimum Data in Sapphire
  • 9:00AM 2 June 2025 the University's internal deadline for submission of Mandatory Document to be considered for submission to the NHMRC
  • 9:00AM 4 June 2025 Applicants must confirm they have made changes based on administrative feedback, and certified and submitted their application in Sapphire

Mandatory Documents received by 9am 2 June

The University will complete administrative review by 5pm, 2 June. Applicants must confirm amendments have been made and certified and submitted their application in Sapphire by 9am 4 June.

If applicant’s confirmation is not received by 9am 4 June, while all effort will be made, the University cannot guarantee that their application will be submitted. 

Mandatory Documents received after 9am 2 June

All effort will be made to provide administrative review. Administrative review is not guaranteed thus lead to application may be not submitted.

Regardless of when administrative review is issued to the applicant, the deadline for the applicant to confirm that amendment has been made, and certified and submitted their application in Sapphire remain as 9am 4 June.

If applicant’s confirmation is not received by 9am 4 June, while all effort will be made, the University cannot guarantee that their application will be submitted. 

New Applications

Any new application and mandatory documents submitted after 12:00PM 4 June 2025 will not be endorsed by the University of Sydney.

Who's eligible

Please refer to the NHMRC postgraduate scholarship guidelines.

You must:

  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or a permanent resident of Australia at the time of acceptance and for the duration of the scholarship
  • be undertaking a PhD or a master's by research degree
  • not exceed 12 calendar months of full-time equivalent enrolment for a PhD degree, or six calendar months for a master's by research degree, up to 31 December in the year of application
  • include a proposal for a research project based in Australia
  • apply under the research stream that your research proposal aligns with
  • not have previously received funding for a NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarship
  • not be a recipient of an Australian Government funded stipend such as a Research Training Program (RTP) stipend.

Background

The NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarships scheme funds successful applicants to attain a research based postgraduate degree. It aims to support these outstanding health and medical graduates early in their career, so they can be trained to conduct research that is internationally competitive and develop a capacity for original independent research within Australia.
