Leaders in infectious diseases research

,

We are global leaders in emerging infections and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). These are existential threats for humanity and require solutions that address the interdependent roles of humans, animals, the environment and socio-political contexts.

They require fundamental research into pathogen biology, genomics and host pathogen interactions to develop tools to advance new public health and therapeutic solutions – and ethical and social research to ensure successful implementation into practice and policy.

We are tackling the challenges of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.

$1.49 million | 2023 - 2027

Led by Sydney ID’s Professor Ramon Shaban, HIRAID Aged Care improves the health and wellbeing of older individuals living in residential aged care.

Anchored in a strong foundation of research evidence and expert input, HIRAID® improves the clinical outcomes, quality of patient assessment, recognition & response to clinical deterioration, nurses’ communication, decision-making, situational awareness & task management skills, and nurses' self-efficacy and levels of anxiety.

HIRAID® Aged Care will meet the contemporary practice needs of RNs working in aged care having been co-designed and tested by them and the recipients of their care in partnership with leading aged care providers and other agencies committed to the provision of quality care in aged care nationally.

Funding body: Medical Research Future Fund  - Department of Health and Aged Care

$19 million | 2022 - 2027

Led by Sydney ID’s Deputy Director, Professor Jamie Triccas, the Advancing Vaccine Adjuvant Research for tuberculosis (AVAR-T) project aims to reduce the global burden of tuberculosis (TB).

The University of Sydney and The Centenary Institute, together with collaborators have been awarded an AU$19 million contract from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), to develop the next generation of tuberculosis (TB) vaccines.

TB, a disease that primarily affects the lungs, is caused by infection from the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Approximately 1.5 million people die from TB each year and it is a leading cause of death globally.

Investigator: Professor Jamie Triccas

Funding body: US National Institutes of Health (NIH)

$18.2 million | 2022 - 2027

Sydney ID’s Deputy Director, Professor Jamie Triccas, leads an international consortium awarded up to US$19.3 million by The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations to support the development of a 'variant-proof' SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidate.

The multidisciplinary collaboration of Bharat Biotech International Ltd (Bharat Biotech), India, ExcellGene SA, Switzerland and the University of Sydney, Australia seeks to establish preclinical and clinical proof of concept for a protein subunit vaccine designed to provide broad protection against all known SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern, as well as future and yet to emerge variants of the virus.

Investigator: Professor Jamie Triccas

Funding body: Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI)

$4.3 million

Staph aureus (golden staph) bloodstream infections are common and deadly, despite antibiotics. Phages are viruses that infect and kill bacteria. We have been treating patients with severe infections using phages produced by our team since 2022.

This trial, led by Sydney ID’s Dr Ameneh Khatami, will investigate use of a locally produced 2-phage combination (cocktail) that targets the golden staph bacteria to see if it provides an advantage in addition to antibiotics in treating patients with severe golden staph bloodstream infections.

Investigator: Dr Ameneh Khatami

Funding body: National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies scheme

$485,000 | 2024 - 2026

Sydney ID EMCR, Dr Kenya Fernandes has been awarded a prestigious Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Award to lead pioneering research into the intricate relationships between bees and fungi within Australian ecosystems.

Dr Fernandes will explore how specific fungi interact with both honey bee and native bee populations, exploring their nutritional and functional roles. She will investigate how bees use antimicrobial hive products, such as honey and plant resins, to naturally regulate fungal growth – potentially identifying leads for the development of new eco-friendly fungicides based on these natural compounds.

Investigator: Dr Kenya Fernandes

Funding body: Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA)

Parasitology image bank

The image bank is a historic archive of images produced by Dr John Walker during his career as a medical parasitologist.

Dr John Walker is a University of Sydney alumni who worked at the Sydney School of Public Health and Westmead Hospital as a Senior Lecturer in Parasitology for 38 years. His work focused on diagnostic parasitology and epidemiological surveys of gastrointestinal parasites, malaria and filariasis.

A major emphasis of his latter work was providing malaria reference laboratory services and maintenance of a register of malaria cases imported into NSW. Dr Walker retired in 2005 but has retained his interest in parasitology.
